AI in law enforcement sounds cool on paper.
Faster investigations. Smarter crime prediction. Less paperwork.
But the deeper question isn’t just “What can AI do?”
It’s “What do people think about it?”
A new study shows that public support for AI in policing depends less on AI knowledge itself and more on how fair people feel it would be if machines helped make decisions.
That’s a different way of thinking about AI — and it matters.
The Trust Problem
The researchers used a framework called procedural justice, which is basically about how fair and legitimate people think a system is.
Turns out, when it comes to police using AI, people care less about whether AI is smart and more about:
Whether the system is neutral
Whether citizens have a say or voice in how it’s used
Whether AI-based decisions are trustworthy
If people worry that AI might be biased, unfair, or opaque, they are far less likely to support AI policing — even if they understand what it does.
Interestingly, concerns about dignity and respect didn’t significantly affect support — suggesting people see AI more as a tool than as a social actor.
Knowledge Isn’t Enough
One of the surprising findings:
Simply knowing more about AI didn’t automatically make people more supportive of its use in policing.
Instead, knowledge only mattered when it changed perceptions of fairness.

If knowing how AI works also makes people think it’s fair, they’re more supportive.
But if it just explains how it works without addressing fairness, support doesn’t increase.
This flips a common assumption on its head: It’s not enough to educate people about technology, you also have to address their concerns about justice and legitimacy.
Age, Trust, and TV News
The study also found interesting patterns in who supports AI policing:
Older people were less likely to support it
Higher-income people were more likely to support it
People who trust the police generally were more supportive
And — unexpectedly — people who watched more television news were also more supportive
It suggests that support isn’t just technical — it’s emotional and social. People are influenced by how they perceive authority and fairness, not just by algorithms.
What This Means for Policy
This research points to something important for anyone thinking about AI in policing:
Technical performance isn’t enough to win public support.
Communities won’t be won over purely by efficiency promises or performance metrics.
Instead, they want:
Transparency about how AI decisions are made
Public input into how AI is used
Clear safeguards against bias and discrimination
Demonstrated accountability when things go wrong
Without these, AI adoption risks eroding trust — not building it.
